Food: Restaurants, Orchards and Farmer's Markets

Spruce Pine was voted one of Romantic Asheville's Coolest Towns Around and Conde Naste dubbed it as "possibly the best small town food scene in the US"! Plus, Bakersville, Burnsville and Western North Carolina in general have a lot to offer. Here are some of our favorites, but there are more! Please note, some of the local businesses change their hours in the winter (typically December - February, but some go into March), so you might call or check out their Facebook page or website to see what's going on during your proposed stay.

In addition to some chain stores and restaurants there are a number of restaurants, in particular on upper and lower street in the historic part of Spruce Pine that are locally owned with unique offerings. And, don't miss the walking bridge to Riverside Park!

Here are some of our favorite haunts:

The Fox and The Fig is located in downtown Spruce Pine. They make coffee and tea drinks, breakfast options, and light lunch fare, such as quiche and salads. Everything is from scratch and the owners are super nice!

The Fox and The Fig

We love this restaurant and coffee shop. Everything is made from scratch and their coffee and tea drinks are a favorite! Guests also really like the laid back atmosphere.

The Dispensary

The Knife & Fork

Farm to table restaurant that's white tablecloth, but casual - reservations suggested. We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this and their sister spot, Spoon! Check their Facebook pages! It is not uncommon for either spot to have pop-up restaurants, guests or something interesting going on!

Spoon and The Knife and Fork both have amazing food! Here is Chef Nathan Allen pictured with some gorgeous roasters up at Spoon!

Mixology, Local Beer, Wine... great foods and snacks. It's kind of a pub in the European sense of the word - come early and people sometimes bring their children, Stay later and there is live music and/or great conversation and a little more adult atmosphere. Chef Nate is usually behind the bar or close by. Check their Facebook pages! It is not uncommon for either spot to have pop-up restaurants, guests or something interesting going on!

The Pizza Shoppe & Dry Co. Brewing Company

Handmade pizza and craft brews made in house

The Tropical Grill

Stuarts on the Green

Hef's Restaurant

Hef's makes enormous hamburgers, great onion rings, and assortment of hot wings (our favorite is the sweet and spicy one).

Sports bar with big juicy burgers, an array of hot wings, pizza and other options!

DT's Coffee Shop

Sandwiches, coffee drinks, hand scooped ice cream

DT's Coffee Shop, this is a local hangout with coffee drinks, full breakfast and lunch options, hand scooped ice cream and other treats!

Penland School Coffee Shop (They make creative all handmade sandwiches, soups, drinks, desserts, latte, cappuccino, and espresso,)

Located on Penland Campus at the Pines Dining Hall call (828) 765-1083 for information.

Bakersville, Burnsville & Nearby Areas

Bakersville and Burnsville have little shops to explore and mom and pop restaurants. Here are some of our favorites.

Bonnie & Clyde's - Bakersville

Great Burgers and other options!

Pig & Grits in Burnsville offers delicious breakfast and southern-style BBQ options with a sauce selection that represents the many styles - mustard, sweet, vinegar and more!

Blue Mountain Pizza - Weaverville

Blue Mountain Pizza - Weaverville (on the way to Asheville)

We make a point to stop here at least once per trip! The pizza is outstanding! Their homemade ice cream is excellent, as is their craft beer! They have traditional pizza combinations and their own special creations. Every one we have tried has been lip-smacking good and just a little different than anything else we've ever had. Try just about any topping with their parmesan peppercorn crust and you will go home a happy camper. We love the Parrot Head and The Islander!
